The Department of English is committed to excellence in performance and determined to provide excellent educational opportunities and services that fulfill the requirements of employers and also contribute to the holistic development of the society.
MISSIONTo motivate the students to be creative, proficient in LSRW skills and to remain well equipped to meet the aspirations of the employers. The Department of English has a long and colourful history. The department has seen the likes of legendary teachers like Prof. Unni, Prof.S.N.Kulanthaisamy, Prof.K.Chellappan, Prof. S. Navaneethan, Dr.R. Balachandran (Bala) and many others. The department offers Part II English paper for all the under graduate students of the college. B.A. English was started in 1980. M.A., English was started in 2003 and M.Phil was started in 2010. Ph.D., Research course was started in 2011. The department has so far produced 22 Doctorates and many more pursue their Doctoral studies. Nearly 100 students have successfully completed their M.Phil., Studies.
The Department has a very good library with thousands of books and copies of prestigious research journals like Encounter, TLS Literary Review and The Literary Criterion.The Department has a language laboratory. Students have been trained to strengthen their communicative skills in English, with the help of the gadgets in the lab.
The department has conducted many seminars. In 2009, it conducted a TANSCHE sponsored State level Seminar on Indian Writing in English. In 2012, it conducted an International Seminar on "Literatures of East and West in Translation" ; it also, conducted in the same year, an International Conference on Canadian Literature. Later, UGC sponsored Seminar on Examination Reforms (2010), TANSCHE sponsored Seminar on Comparative Literature (TANSCHE2013) and Workshop on Translation Studies (2019) were conducted. A Webinar was conducted on 27/05/2021, in which Dr. V. Balachandran., Asst. Professor of English, Cihan University, Duhok spoke on "Suggestopedia - A Method of Teaching English".
Quite a few students of the department have got University ranks. A few students have cleared SET/ NET Examinations. Faculty members have distinguished themselves by acting as Resource Persons in various Academic Events, by publishing research articles in various national and international journals and by editing text books.
